Yard of the Month

How is The Yard of the Month Chosen?

The Fairfield Harbour Garden Club Yard of the Month is awarded for the months of April, May, June, July, and October.

Fairfield Harbour is divided into five sections.  The Yard of the Month Committee Members canvas every street within Fairfield Harbour and selects five nominations, one from each section.  The winning yard is voted on by members of the Yard of the Month (YOM) Committee.

The committee uses the following procedure:

  • Teams of two volunteers canvas each section and nominate one yard. The team drives around and looks at the front yards. They do not walk on a property or critique back yards.
  • Nominations may not have been awarded YOM within the last three years.
  • All committee members vote individually for the final winner. The Chairman votes only in the event of a tie.

The following criteria is used to determine a winner:

  • Are plant materials and colors interesting and are choices and size suitable to the location?
  • Does the yard have proportion, rhythm, scale, balance, and a focal point?
  • What is the vigor and condition of plant materials? Are plant materials healthy? Are shrubs well cared for and trimmed?
  • What is the general effect of the landscaping? Does it have a finished look? Is it well groomed? Are weeds in control? Are the walkways and the driveway neat and well-tended?
  • Are accessories complementary to layout? Are they in balance and scale with each other?
    • Accessories include trellises, ponds, bird baths and feeders, sundials, banners, window boxes and statuary, etc.
